How Great Thou Art!

I love the old Hymns... Something about them just takes me back to being 8 and sitting next to my Grandma (now past on)... I can still hear her harmony as I would stand in the shadow this mighty oak, watching her intently as she praised our God!

I woke up this morning humming this tune and realize I didn't know the words, just the melody. After reading through these simple, yet powerful words my soul could not help but erupt a few tears and that friend "Mr. Lump" would occasionally arrive as my voice trembled trying to get them out.

If you have a moment, take some time to slowly read through this hymn, savor the words as you let them melt on your heart. This time of year we hear thunder, smell the sweet rain and see Gods beautiful work in the green mountains and at night the stars are well... heavenly and being that I love to awe at Gods handiwork... this song has a whole new meaning to me.

If you don't dare sing out loud.... Take a listen to the music video below it is awesome!
(yup I'm a little partial to Alan Jackson) :O)

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!
When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!
And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!
When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

  1. This was one of my Grandpa's favorite songs. So favorite that it was one of the two played at his funeral in April. As soon as I started to read the post, tears welled up and I started to remember singing it in church with him. Miss him so, as I am sure you do your Grandma.

  4. Thank you Tamara for a good heart wrenching cry this morning. I needed it. This song always brings tear to my eye. I surely want this sung at my funeral. Even though we know how awesome our God is, The song just bring me to my knees.
    In your post when you were describing the rain, thunder and the green of the mountain around you, I thought, why can't I just drive up and say "Hey!".

  5. The old hymns are definitely the best, and this is one of the best of them all! My dad (retired Methodist minister) would select the old hymns to sing in church as often as he could. To this day, in my collection of christian music, there are more old classics than anything else.

    Thanks for the reminder today of how Great our God is!

  7. That is TOTALLY one of my all-time favorite hymns. In fact, I think it's one I want played at my funeral (not that I'm planning that or anything... you know... just preparing ahead for the future ;-))

  8. One of my favorite hymns! I can't sing it without tearing up. We all sang it accapella at Katrina's wedding while in the shadow of those Alaskan mountains. I couldn't sing though because of ol' Mr. Lump. :)
