What Are You Holding On To?

I just met with a sweet friend and we were talking about how we as a society have so much stuff! Our homes are cluttered to the max with furniture, appliances, books, electronics, knickknacks, hygiene, holiday decor, toys, home decorations, camping, winter, summer, spring and autumn things, travel stuff, animal stuff, clothing, shoes, cleaning and the list goes on and on!

Oye, this junk, litter and clutter - Having things around that we don't need and never use! We are indeed a nation of collectors of junk! We have mounds and rooms and drawers and bookcases and trunks and closets and garages and attics and basements and sheds full of stuff we don't use or need, but we keep it and it ends up keeping us in perpetual motion by cleaning and re-arranging and working to pay for it and maintain it!

We laughed as we thought of our homes and what was contained there in and what we deemed loved and my friend said, "Ya know, I just need to come to grips with, if someone walked into my home and said that they really like something could I say, well great then take it with you... and really mean it!" Wow, there's somth'n to chew on!

We are reminded in God word how we are not to hold on to the things of this world! The possessions of this life belong to this life; and since this life is less important than the next, the things of this life should be valued less than the things of eternity.

This was the mistake of the wealthy farmer in Luke 12:16-21; "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.' "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." ' "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."

Awhile back, I began to clean out and de-clutter my house only keeping what we "needed." Now I am doing an inventory spiritually to see where I am and what I "need." Seems to be a much more needed inventory here than in the material world. How's your spiritual house doing? Is it cluttered for Christ? Filled and overflowing with spiritual goodness? I know I need a lot of work in mine! It's much easier to invest in the things of this world, but I'm choosing to clutter up my house with qualities that glorify Him, won't ya join me?
